Pro-democracy reporters sound optimistic about the midterm elections in the United States. Poll numbers suggest that the Democrats will take control of the House, possibly even the Senate. But I have a sense of foreboding, a sense of unease. I expect that something bad is going to happen.
The president is doing everything he can to sow doubts about the election results as he has done many times before. His Department of Justice is trying to interfere with state election processes. Others worry that Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will refuse to swear in duly elected Democrats.
Even if Democrats take control of the House, there will still be a loose cannon in the oval office. From what I hear, when a malignant narcissist loses control, it ain’t pretty. Doctors believe the president has frontotemporal dementia, which exacerbates his narcissism. In recent speeches, his disinhibition is on full display.
We can expect to see more outbursts, more verbal attacks on the press, possibly even physical attacks, more legal harassment of his enemies, and more childish insults and bullying.
The administration reportedly plans to escalate the war against Iran after the midterm elections. Senator Chris Murphy describes the plans as “insane.”
If Republicans turn against Trump, it won’t be because the scales fell from their eyes. They have not had a moral awakening. He has always been vile and amoral. His racism and misogyny have never been hidden. Republicans don’t object to his lack of character and cruel policies. It took a war and high gas and diesel prices to make them finally see that he could not be trusted.
Some say that Trump is like a mirror, reflecting back what America has become. It’s true. He reflects back the most ugly things about this country, including its racial bigotry, self-centeredness, and indifference to corrupt and unethical behavior. The reflection will still be ugly even if Trump’s power is diminished.
It is emotionally exhausting to live in these divided states. I have no hope for democracy. Mentally, I feel a bit unwell. Not like myself. Unmotivated.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.Psalm 20:7-8
I won’t stay down for long. I will rise up and stand firmly on my faith in God. An evil man will not steal my joy or my hope.

Trump supporters: Don’t bother telling me to leave. I was born here. I have every right to be here and to criticize my country and its president freely.
